Building Strong Foundations for Health

When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be. ~ Lao Tzu
When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be. ~ Lao Tzu
I am often surprised how people look over the most basic things able to support their well-being. The most common things people would benefit from incorporating into their life are rest, water, and deep breathing.
Rest is important for many reasons. The body restores itself during sleep. If you are not sleeping enough or sleeping soundly your body does not have the opportunity to restore and heal. Practice good sleep hygiene by going to bed at the same time each night. Avoid eating, exercising, or consuming caffeine too close to your bedtime. While you are drifting off to sleep, turn off all electronics, focus on your breath, let go of concerns from your day, and avoid thinking about tomorrow’s schedule. Let your sleep time be truly restorative.
Water composes 50-65% of the average human body. Mental performance and physical coordination becomes impaired as the body becomes dehydrated. Dehydration has already begun before thirst occurs. The recommended water intake to avoid dehydration is half your body weight in ounces. So if you weigh 150 lbs you should drink 75 ounces of water per day.
Breathing is automatic so people rarely give any thought to the quality of their breath. I frequently see people with shallow breathing patterns. Shallow breathing patterns do not allow the respiratory muscles to go through their full range of motion, which sets up patterns of muscle restriction in the upper body. Deep breathing can promote a sense of calm and release stress and anxiety. Oxygen to the muscle is essential to their healthy function.
I encourage everyone to look for ways to stay healthy and to start with those things that are simple and free. If you start with a well rested, hydrated body, and use your breath to enhance your health, you will have a strong foundation on which to incorporate
additional wellness strategies. There is a profound sense of empowerment that comes from taking steps to create routines that support good health. Looking to others to restore and maintain your health will never replace the benefits of making good choices in your daily habits.
